Saving Resources and Earning Money with Hive and OhmConnect

shahla · March 16, 2018 · 10 Comments

This post has been sponsored by Hive. The opinions expressed are my own.

One of my largest pet peeves is wasting resources. Whether it is wasting time, money, food or energy, it serves no purpose for the greater good. One of our most important resources is energy, and thanks to a new partnership between Hive and OhmConnect it’s easier now more than ever to cut back on our energy usage. Another exciting benefit is that people who live in certain parts of California can get paid for saving energy during alerted peak hours by signing up with OhmConnect. Not only are these customers doing their part to lessen pollution but they are also being paid to do so.

When someone signs up for OhmConnect, he or she will receive notifications during peak energy consumption times (otherwise knows as #OhmHours). During this time, customers gain credits for reducing energy use or energy not used. With the partnership between Hive and OhmConnect, one can remotely set his or her Hive Active Thermostat to an energy efficient temperature during #OhmHours to maximize energy savings and earn more credits. As current Hive customers know, this can all be done anywhere using the Hive app on your smartphone.

You may be asking how OhmConnect pays you to save. OhmConnect monitors the electricity grid, and when unsustainable power plants turn on during peak times, OhmConnect sends #OhmHours notifications where customers can earn credits for energy not used. By saving energy at those peak times, the electricity grid does not have to turn on additional power plants. Energy authorities pay for that, and OhmConnect passes those earnings on to you. For example, when I am notified that #OhmHours are in effect, I can respond promptly using my Hive app to adjust my Hive Active Thermostat from almost anywhere. Then I would earn credits and get paid for responding to the notification.

In our household, we love how Hive has changed the way we manage our energy consumption. It has helped us save money by controlling our appliances, lights and thermostat even when we aren’t home. Now with the new partnership between OhmConnect and Hive we can help the planet by reducing our energy usage during peak hours and get paid for it.

If you do not own Hive smart products yet, you can take advantage of becoming an OhmConnect member and get 20% off select Hive smart home packs. If you aren’t familiar with Hive yet, check them out. Hive smart products are also compatible with smart speakers like Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Making our home smart and more efficient has helped us save valuable resources, and thanks to Hive for making it so easy!

What a truly great initiative this is! They have really structured this so well to even incentivise people to do the right thing for the environment as many can’t be bothered to do so otherwise. I am just learning about Hive smart products now and will also do my bit in passing on the advantages for people to embrace initiatives like this to benefit our world.

This is such a great idea. California is definitely ahead of the curve for offering incentives for those who adjust energy usage during peak hours.
