DIY Punny Planters - Treehouse Threads

Earlier this year I set out to customize some planters. There were so many funny planters that incorporated plant puns! One of my favorite blog posts that inspired my planters is this one by My Bright Ideas blog. For this post, I will be showing you my step-by-step (and some missteps). I will also be sharing a list of plant puns perfect for your planter. Try saying that last part 3 times fast. I did not make these puns up and do not know who the originator of each one is, I definitely did not create them, just curating them here.

Michael’s sent me a gift card and I purchased some planters there. You may even have terracotta planters laying around that you want to breath some life into. I also purchased outdoor acrylic paint, foam applicator set and a paint pen from Michael’s to make this project.

Originally, I tried to use a stencil to paint on the puns. However, it was a mess and the letters smeared very easily. I ended up using my Cricut machine and cutting out the sayings on permanent vinyl made to withstand outdoor elements. Looking back, the stencil approach may have worked better if I used plastic stencils instead of paper.

To paint the planters, I used the foam applicators and made horizontal brush strokes. I ended up only painting with one or two coats because I wanted the peach tones of the terracotta to come through a little to give it a rustic feel.

Another misstep to avoid is transferring the vinyl saying in one piece. The planters are curved and doing so will result in your saying not being straight. I learned to transfer letter by letter. This can be a bit tedious, but it is worth it to get your saving straight and not curved.
