I am all about a good dollar store hack (especially when it involves skulls and succulents!). This DIY is so easy and can be used as decor around your house or as a hostess gift.
Here’s what you need:
- Plastic skull from the dollar store
- Spray paint (I used Rust-oleum’s metallic silver And layered on their silver glitter spray).
- Succulent (smaller sized)
- Rocks
- Marking pen
- Sharp knife
I had everything but the plastic skulls laying around my house (including the succulents). If you are looking for a good, and cost-effective, place for succulents go to either Home Depot or Trader Joe’s. Both usually have a good selection of the smaller succulents that you need for this project and are less than $3.
Take your marking pen and one of the succulents. Gently remove the succulent from its store-bought container (make sure the soil is dry during this step). Turn the container upside down and trace the opening on top of the skull. Once you have your circle drawn, put the succulent back in its container.
Take your sharp knife and cut out the circle and discard. Also, use your knife to poke a hole large enough to allow for proper drainage.
I filled my skulls with rocks to make sure the ones that I am putting outside are heavy enough to withstand the wind. The addition of rocks also helps with succulent drainage. At this point you can take the succulent out of its container and plant it in the skull. Another option is to place the container with the succulent inside the skull. I chose the latter route since it was one less step).
Voila! The skulls don’t look plastic anymore and they make a perfect decorative accent. We are planning on making rainbow ones for my daughter’s room. Follow along on my Instagram account to see when we do this!
With love,
