Halloween has always been a favorite around here, and while we are waiting to see how it may be different in 2020…I have rounded up some social distanced Halloween ideas as back up. Before anyone gets upset, I am not proposing we cancel Halloween. My kids would be devastated (I mean come on who are we kidding…I would be devastated). If you are safely trick-or-treating; AWESOME! However, we are a high-risk family so we want to be prepared with ideas where we can safely celebrate Halloween while socially distanced. Especially since our neighborhood gets incredibly busy with groups on 10-20 kids trick-or-treating together.

Socially Distanced Candy Tunnel
This genius socially distanced Halloween idea popped up on my social media feed one day. A dad from Ohio created a candy chute (homemade tunnel or slide) to keep distance between themselves and trick or treaters. Critics have been quick to point out that the person handing out the candy still has to touch the packages, so it isn’t completely contactless. However, our kids don’t eat their candy until they are home to pass inspection and pay their parent tax (just kidding! Kind of…) so it works for us. We already have people that do something similar to this in our neighborhood from their front balconies. We may do the same here!
Halloween Scavenger “Egg” Hunt
Quite a few moms I have spoken to are planning an Easter-style egg hunt for Halloween candy. I think a lot of people are planning to do a Halloween scavenger hunt because so many of the Halloween-themed eggs are sold out! I ordered jack-o-lanterns, white ones and also glow-in-the-dark ones (all are linked below). I plan on using permanent marker to draw skull faces on the white ones. And even though the glow-in-the-dark ones don’t have great reviews; I will put some glow sticks inside them for candy hunting in the dark!

Halloween Piñata
Many people are celebrating Halloween with the small bubbles they created for socializing. A Halloween-themed piñata is a fun way to disseminate candy! We purchased this spider one and plan on filling it up and taking some of our 2020 aggression out on this cardboard spider (I would stand far behind on this one). Check the sizes on each one to make sure they aren’t too small!

Halloween Movie Midnight Marathon
My kids are obsessed with staying up until midnight. They ask all the time and the answer is almost always ‘no’ (with the exception of New Year’s Eve). Since Halloween is on a Saturday this year, I had told them early on that I had a back-up plan just in case we don’t get to go trick-or-treating. My backup plan is to have a Halloween movie marathon with an all-you-can-eat candy buffet and of course they can stay up until midnight! The kids were so excited and said this will be the best Halloween ever. My kids are 8 and 6 and thank goodness still easy to please!
Virtual Halloween Party
We just celebrated my 6 year old’s birthday with a virtual painting party. It was super fun and turned out great. You can find painting sets that are Halloween-themed at many craft and big box stores. Another fun idea that everyone can do together virtually is a “gingerbread” haunted house decorating party.
Boo Basket
We make and drop off Boo baskets to friends and family every year. This year we are excited to continue this tradition as it’s perfect for a socially distanced Halloween. I also went a little overboard and created a basket for my kids. Every year we celebrate my son’s birthday during Halloween-time at Disneyland. Since Disneyland is still closed; I wanted to bring a little Disney Magic to them. Each basket has Halloween-themed pajamas, crafts, stickers and books from the dollar-ish section of Target, a mini make your own cookie Haunted House, Mickey bubble wand, stuffed animal from Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloween-themed blanket and Mickey pumpkin ears. I made the flags (you can download what I made at the end of this post). So many of the items I purchased for this special basket have already sold out. Check your local Disney Store to see if they are available. I linked what is available below!
