My daughter was missing Disneyland so we decided to add a touch of magic to her room. We couldn’t find what we were looking for, so we decided to make our own DIY Mickey inspired art. I love adding art pieces to the kids’ rooms, my daughter has this print from one of our trips on her wall already. It’s a big bonus when the art has a positive, inspirational message. I was inspired by our traditional Mickey ear hats we bought at Disneyland with our names embroidered on the back. I thought, how cute would it be to have positive words/qualities that remind me of my daughter on the hats where names would go? She is eight-years-old and I hope she always sees herself in these positive affirmations.

At the end of this post you will find the shape of mickey inspired ears I made on my Cricut design space using three ovals. This is for personal use only. You can make your own or use this one as a stencil/svg. My ears measured 7.096″ w x 4.481″ l each. If you are using a cutting machine, attach whatever script text you would like to use to cut the affirmations into the hats.
Here is what you need to make your own Mickey inspired art with affirmations:
- Cricut or Silhouette machine
- 22 x 28 inch poster board
- Black cardstock ( I used six 12 x 12 sheets)
- Yellow cardstock (you only need one sheet, letter-sized is fine)
- Black felt pen/fine marker (I used a black flair pen)
- Tape
- Ruler
First, my daughter and I took some time talking about the affirmations she wanted on her wall. It was a good exercise to talk and learn more about how she sees herself. When we came up with twelve words we liked, I was ready to get to work. Then, I used my Cricut machine to cut out the Mickey inspired ears and cut the words into them. Since the font that I used has a lot of thin curves, it makes it harder to cut and adhere them onto the ears. Instead, I cut the words into the hats and taped a piece of yellow cardstock behind the hat to peek through.
Word of caution: Some of the letters will not stay intact when they are cut (like the holes in the letters o, a, etc). I used my black flair pen to draw in the parts of the letters instead of gluing them on (this saved a ton of time!).
Once I had all of the affirmations cut and yellow pieces taped onto the back of the Mickey inspired ears, I was ready to tape them onto the poster board. To make sure that the ears were properly spaced I used a framing square, you can use a ruler if you don’t have one. Then, I taped them all on the back of the ears to secure them.
Finally, you are ready to frame your customized DIY Mickey inspired art! I used a frame we had on hand and taped it in for a layered look. I linked some poster frames here if you do not have any on hand. For a more playful look, I ordered this hanging magnetic frame for under twenty dollars.
Overall, I love how this DIY Mickey inspired art project turned out. It is even more special because of the words of affirmation that I hope my daughter will take to heart every time she sees this piece.
If you make your own, tag me! I would love to see it!

I love this idea and I love the words that your daughter chose! I, too, hope she always has that confidence.
