For this year’s Halloween mantle, I wanted to add checkered bats. Weeks ago, I ordered checkered scrapbook paper from Amazon. However, once it arrived it was not at all what I expected (blurry, mostly other designs that were not checkered). So I set off and created my own checkered paper and I’ll share the printable with you at the end of this post!

Every year I try out something new for Halloween. This year I am tailoring my Halloween decor to fit with the room’s vibe. My dining room has a lot of blue tones so I channeled that and created a coastal floral Halloween theme in that room. My family room is black and white and I loved checkered print. So I knew I wanted to incorporate that into my Halloween mantle decor. I also incorporated ceramic ghosts, disco balls, a disco pumpkin and a disco skull.
It feels like Halloween decor has been out in the stores since July, and now that we are in October it has been replaced by Christmas. I snoozed on picking up a Halloween garland for my mantle, so I decided to create my own using this gold star Christmas garland. I spray painted the star garland black and it made for the perfect Halloween mantle accent.
Checkered Bats
To make your checkered bats, you will need cardstock, a printer and either a bat stencil to cut out various sized bats or a Cricut machine. I used my Cricut to cut mine in all different sizes. These were the black bats I purchased to finish the look.
To adhere your bats to the wall without damaging, I recommend a stronger painters tape. It’s great for repositioning too!
You can download the checkered paper pattern here and create your own bats. If you do, please tag me on social media! I would love to see them!
With love,
Shahla
