Today, I will be sharing with you my favorite way to be a bit of an extra sports parent by making your own DIY big head cutout to cheer on your team. This is a fun and easy project; perfect for sports families, graduations, milestone birthdays and more. Last year, I kept getting stopped at sporting events by parents wanting to know where I purchased the big heads. They look at me with disbelief when I say I made it, but I promise anyone can make one.
Supplies
Here is what you need to make your big head:
- Image enlarged and printed on 24 x 36 poster paper* (see notes below)
- Foam board (the one from Dollar Tree seems to work the best). If you don’t have access to a foam board you can use cardboard.
- Pencil
- Scissors (the sharper the better)
- Adhesive (tacky glue or Mod Podge work)
*I have made over a dozen of these and the best way to print is through Walgreens photo. Always check for a coupons because while these enlargement prints get pricey- there is often a coupon for 40-60% off! Also when resizing head, I try to take up the entire printing space. You will get an error about poor print quality, but the pixelation doesn’t bother me as the kids are seeing it from far away and don’t notice.
Big Head Instructions
First, cut out the portion of the head that you want to paste onto the foam board. Once you’re done cutting, trace the head onto the foam board using a pencil. Cut out the traced shape you drew (the foam board is thick so this may be tricky- use a sharp pair of scissors). Then use glue or Mod Podge to adhere the photo onto the foam board. Allow to dry and you are ready to cheer on your loved one with the big head!
Fun fact, I thought my kids would be embarrassed by me bringing their big heads to games, but they loved it!
Whether you are headed to nationals or cheering on your kids as they try a new sport- I hope these big heads bring lots of laughs! We even made some to go to a San Francisco 49ers football game.
With love,
Shahla
