Back to school season is upon us which means it is time for the ‘First Day of School’ pictures! This year I was inspired by flags I saw for sale in a boutique. I thought I would try to make similar flags for my kids’ first day. They turned out great! And the best part? I used a lot of things I already had at home and paid less than a dollar to make these. If you don’t have everything it will probably cost you $15 dollars.
Here’s what I used:
- Dowel (36 inch from the craft store for less than a dollar)
- Gift wrapping paper
- Silhouette machine with vinyl (or you can buy letter stickers from craft stores)
- Double sided tape
- Various sized ribbons
- Rotary cutter (use scissors if you don’t have one available)
- Ruler
Cut a piece of wrapping paper and fold it in half. Make it big enough so that it will work for your project. I measured about 20 inches before I cut a piece of wrapping paper off. Once folded in half, cut a triangle (keep in mind that the folded side will be the side that the dowel will be taped in). A rotary cutter (affiliate link, I have this one) makes it so much easier to cut! The base of my triangle is 12 inches. I used a ruler to keep my triangle sides clean and straight.
Secure the dowel using double-sided tape and then tape the flag shut as well.
Decorate the flag with stickers purchased or use your cutting machine to cut vinyl words. I had to play around with this a lot to get the right sizing and placement. Mostly I had to play with angles to make sure the words fit. Tie various sized ribbons at the bottom. Double-tie to make secure.
I repeated the same steps on a smaller dowel to make the words ‘first day’. I will have ‘last day’ on the back to be prepared for June!
I love following along with my friends near and far and getting to see their sweet babies grow from preschool to high school. Even if it does make me feel old!!
With love,
Shahla
