These DIY feather sleeves are inspired by Orly Shani from The DIY Designer. They are such a fun way to glam up any outfit. I started by making a white one to dress up a super versatile white button down. Everyone needs a good button down that they can wear dressed up and dressed down. I’ll share my favorite below. Supplies
All you need to make these DIY feather sleeves are:
- slap bracelets
- feathers*
- needle and thread.
If you don’t want to buy slap bracelets, you can sew the feathers directly onto a sleeve. Or if you want a removable option. Take an old dress shirt with button cuffs, cut off the cuff of the sleeve and glue the feathers right on. That way you can add it to any shirt and jacket like the slap bracelets. Orly has a great step-by-step that I used when sewing my feathers on the bracelets. Full disclosure, I am terrible at sewing and put off this project for awhile because of my fears. However, this was super easy and forgiving!
*I purchased my feathers from Amazon, but when I make more I will purchase them from a craft/fabric store to ensure better quality. My feathers had lots of marabou as filler and not as much ostrich which made it feel a little less glammed up and also had quite a bit of shedding.
How to Wear Your DIY Feather Sleeves
The possibilities are endless! They are a cute addition to button down shirts, blazers, sequin dresses, long sleeve tees, etc. I always wanted to purchase this shirt from J. Crew but I hate dry cleaning clothes and I knew I wanted to have a removable feather option. This shirt is my favorite classic white button down. It is the perfect length (I like mine a little longer, but also want to be able to tuck my shirt in) and crispness. The shirt sells out often in the white color, but you can sign up to be notified when it comes back in stock (I always have luck doing this). Here is a video with examples of all the ways I wear my button down.
Have fun trying this!
With love,
Shahla
